Identity:
Explore Biblical answers to some of the deepest questions we ask about identity and purpose.
Meditate on the truth in these scriptures and ask the Lord to reveal deeper personal meaning to you.
Identity in Christ
He defined it. We live it.
Overview
Identity in Christ is the foundation of a faithful life. When we come to Jesus, we receive a new identity — loved, chosen, forgiven, and made new. This truth shapes how we see ourselves and how we walk out our calling.
As we learn who we are in Him, we begin to wear that truth with confidence, speak it with conviction, and live it with purpose. Identity isn’t something we strive to earn; it’s something we grow into as we root ourselves in God’s Word and believe His truth about who we are.
Sit in these scriptures and think about God's heart for you and how Jesus made you new. If you grasp the depth of His love for you everything you get from people becomes a bonus. He truly is all you need.
Who does God say I am?
This question matters because everything else flows from identity: confidence, calling, obedience, and even how we love others. When we know who we are in Him, we stop striving to prove ourselves and start walking in the freedom He already secured.
Scripture:
Ephesians 1:4–5 — chosen, adopted
- God chose believers in Christ before the world was created, intending for them to be holy and blameless, and predestined them for adoption as His children through Jesus, fulfilling His loving will and purpose.

2 Corinthians 5:17 — new creation
- Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!

COMMENTARY: So much of our struggle comes from forgetting who we are — or believing lies about who we’re not. Identity in Christ isn’t something we earn; it’s something we receive. God defines us long before the world ever tries to label us. When we root ourselves in what He says, we stop living from insecurity and start living from truth.
TAKEAWAY - As a believer you are a child of God. You are able to live a life free from sin and are forgiven. The old you is gone and you can walk in the fullness of being made new.
What is my purpose in Christ?
Scripture:
This is the “calling” question — Purpose isn’t a mystery God hides from us — it’s a calling He invites us into. Scripture makes it clear that we were created on purpose and for purpose: to reflect Christ, to bear fruit, to walk in good works prepared in advance for us.
Scripture:
Ephesians 2:10 — created for good works
- For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Colossians 1:10 — live worthy of the Lord
- So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

Matthew 5:14–16 — light of the world
- “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

COMMENTARY:
Purpose isn’t just about what we do; it’s about who we become. It’s about living in a way that honors God, builds others up, and reveals His character through our everyday choices. When we understand our purpose, we stop chasing meaning and start living with intention.
TAKEAWAY: When you reflect Christ in all areas of your life you are operating from your identity. As you become more Christlike your gifts will shine and the specific call on your life will become evident. Commit to the process of taking off anything that doesn't align with who he says you are!

Romans 12:1–2 — transformed by renewing your mind
- Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

COMMENTARY: This is where faith becomes practice. It's not what we know- it's what we do with what we know.
Faith becomes real in the “daily.” Not in the big moments, but in the small, unseen choices — the way we speak, respond, forgive, serve, and surrender. Living it out is about alignment: letting God’s Word shape our habits, our mindset, and our actions.
TAKEAWAYS: This question grounds us. It reminds us that discipleship is a lifestyle, not a moment. God doesn’t just call us to believe; He calls us to become. And becoming happens one obedient step at a time, empowered by the Holy Spirit and anchored in truth.
What does this mean to me?
WHAT THIS MEANS:
It means your identity is secure in Christ — not defined by your past, your mistakes, or what others think. When you know who God says you are, you can wear that truth with confidence, speak it with boldness, and live it with purpose. Identity becomes the foundation that shapes how you walk out your calling every day.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
- Replace lies with truth
Identify one false belief you’ve been carrying about yourself and replace it with a specific Scripture that declares who you are in Christ. Speak that truth daily until it becomes your default. - Practice identity‑based decisions
Before responding, choosing, or reacting, pause and ask: “What would someone who is chosen, loved, and called do in this moment?” Let your identity guide your actions. - Build an identity rhythm
Create a simple daily rhythm — one verse to meditate on, one affirmation to speak, and one action to live out — so your identity moves from head knowledge to heart confidence.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES:
- When insecurity shows up
You’re about to lead, speak, or step into something new and fear whispers “You’re not enough.” Instead of shrinking back, you remind yourself of Ephesians 2:10 and step forward as God’s workmanship. - When comparison creeps in
You scroll social media and start feeling behind. Instead of spiraling, you ground yourself in Psalm 139 and thank God for the unique path He’s written for you. - When old labels resurface
Someone brings up your past or you feel shame trying to pull you back. Instead of agreeing with it, you declare 2 Corinthians 5:17 and choose to walk as the new creation you are.
